f} DAYTRIPS FROM TEL AVIV
REHOVOT ГГШП sos
The Weizmann Institute is a 30min. walk back along Herzl St. from the central bus sta-
tion. The bus from Tel Aviv (45min.) makes a stop directly across the street from the
Institute, so watch for its large gates on the left and get off early to avoid backtrack-
ing. Return buses and sherut to Tel Aviv stop at the bus stop to the right when exiting
the Institute.
Rehovot, renowned as a center of technological and agricultural research, is home
to three research institutions: the prestigious Weizmann Institute of Science, the
research facilities of the Faculty of Agriculture of Hebrew University, and the
Development Study Center, specializing in rural development. Due to the large
number of recent immigrants from the former Soviet Union, Yemen, and Ethiopia,
the crowded city is an interesting cultural and socioeconomic mixture; the streets
are filled with falafel vendors and wealthy scientists.
The world-famous Weizmann Institute of Science is named for Israel's first presi-
dent, Dr. Haim Weizmann, the chemist who discovered an innovative way to pro-
duce acetone. This smelly fluid proved essential to England's World War I military
effort, as well as to manicurists everywhere as nail polish remover. Weizmann's
discovery gave him the political clout necessary to persuade Lord Balfour to issue
the 1917 Balfour Declaration, a statement of British support favoring the establish-
ment of a Jewish national homeland. In 1934, Weizmann founded a chemistry
research center in Rehovot to carry out his mandate that Jews in Palestine stay on
the cutting-edge of scientific research and development. Over the years this
research facility has expanded to encompass all major fields of science and it is
responsible for Israel's first computer and particle accelerator.
Tourists can visit the Weizmann House where Weizmann lived while President of
Israel. Walk to the back of the house to see Weizmann's grave. A nearby building
holds the Weizmann Archives, a collection of the scientist-statesman's papers. At
the northern end of the campus, next to the solar tower, is the Garden of Science,
which houses a collection of interactive science exhibits. Tickets, maps, and an
introductory film are at the Visitors Center. (Self-guided tour and
visit to Weizmann House NIS25, students NIS15. Open Su-Th 9am-4pm. Combined
ticket to also see Garden of Science NIS40. Call in advance to schedule tour of
Weizmann House and view the film in English. NIS25, students NIS15. Garden of
Science open Su-Th 10am-5pm.)
Located about a mile from the Weizmann Institute is the Ayalon Institute, a kib-
butz where 1930s and 40s Jewish freedom fighters in Palestine secretly manufac-
tured over two million bullets between 1945 and 1948. Call to schedule an English
tour of the underground factory and a screening of a historical video. (« 930 05 85.
Open Su-Th 8:30am-4pm, F 8:30am-lpm, Sa 9am-4pm. NIS15, children NIS11, stu-
dents NIS10. From the Weizmann Institute gate turn right and walk about 20 min-
utes to Ha-Damah St. or take a bus toward Tel Aviv and ask the driver to stop at
Kiryat Hadamah. Walk down Hadamah (there will be a sign for the Ayalon Insti-
tute), and turn left on Haim Holtzman; the museum is up the hill to the right.)
The cheapest falafel stands (NIS6) are on Herzl St. south of the turnoff to the
main bus station. Another alternative is to stop by the lively shuk on Levkovitz St.
between the bus station and Herzl St.
