BARS
After an exhausting day of suntanning at the beach, many travelers just want an
evening of good company and icy Carlsbergs. And why bother with pricey club
covers when you can join the rest of the crowd dancing in the aisles and on the
tables? Rowdy but generic bars abound around hostel-heavy Ha-Yarkon St. and
Allenby Rd. Israelis-often charged cover when tourists are not because of their
tendency toward smaller bar bills-head inland to bars with a little more charac-
ter. Several great options are hidden away on the Ibn Gvirol sidestreets and in
Florentin. As with clubs, the general closing time is "when the last customer
leaves," which can be as early as midnight or lam on weekdays, but as late as
6am on weekends.
1942, 27 Rosh Pina St. , a few blocks from the central
bus station. For all your nightlife needs, this gorgeous place has a mod checkerboard
dance floor, a pub with the city's cheapest (and best decorated) cocktails (NIS20-28),
and an Arabian-style loft for nargilah (NIS20). Cover: NIS40 includes one drink; NIS60
for all you can eat and drink. Prove it's your birthday and everything is free. Open daily
at 9pm, but only a dance barTh-Sa. Also hosts an after-party at 6:30am on Sa.
Shweball at Rival 27, 27 Rival St. , off Ha-Massger St. Look for the graffiti
mural reading "Rival 27." Relive your childhood, this time with alcohol. Join the friendly,
young Israeli crowd for beer (NIS14-20), cocktails (NIS28, 35 for flaming versions), and
games like pick-up sticks, Connect Four, and taki, the Israeli version of Uno. Open M-Th
and Sa at 9pm, F at 10pm. Fills up at about 11pm.
End of the Night, 16 Ibn Gvirol St. , just above Dizengoff. Look for a big
orange sign that reads 'Mongol'. Twentysomething locals pile on top of each other to
jam to the well-chosen hip-hop and fun1+. Open Th-Sa at 11:30pm.
Florentine 5, at that address , just off Herzl St. If the candlelight, Israeli
classics, and sophisticated crowd don't mellow you out, the nargilah (NIS15) just might
do the trick. Open daily at 9pm.
He-She, 8 Ha-Shomeret St. , off Shefer St. Tel Aviv's most popular gay
bar, thanks to a devoted crowd of locals and tourists. Beer NIS20. Open M-Sa at 8pm.
The Out, 45 Nahalat Binyamin , a few blocks after the pedestrian mall, on
the corner of Montefiore. Two-floor cozy gay bar with red lights and wood floors that lend
a mellow ambiance, especially on romantic-themed Tuesdays. Israeli rock on Mondays,
but the house goes house on weekends. Beer NIS12-18, happy hour prices until 11pm.
Open Sa-W at 9, Th-F at 10.
Joey's Bar, 42 Allenby St. Shake the bartender's hand when you enter
and pound the beers until you're numb enough to get a tattoo next door. Let's Go does
not recommend getting tattoos while intoxicated. Beer NIS14. 25+, 18 for tourists.
Open daily noon-8am.
