fl CAFES
Crowd-gazing is an art in Tel Aviv; chairs on the sidewalk and cafe-au-lait can be
found just about anywhere in the city. Sheinken St. one of the hippest promenades
in town, has a long tradition of artsy liberalism. Along Ben-Yehuda, Dizengoff, and
Ibn Gvirol, three parallel streets, a number of cafes serve local neighborhood folk
and weary shoppers alike. Basel St. (near its intersection with Ibn Gvirol St. a
block above Jabotinsky St.) recently sprouted its own crop of chichi cafes for hip-
per-than-thou Sheinken expats.
TamarCafe, 57 Sheinken St. , provides a quintessential Sheinken experi-
ence. Immortalized in a song by the Israeli pop trio Mango ("Living on Sheinken/drink-
ing coffee at the Tamar Cafe/my dream is to make a short film"), the Tamar is crammed
with locals arguing about who's more liberal. Open Su-Th 7am-8pm, F 7am-5pm.
Babblefish, 13 Rabbi Akiva , near the corner of Najara St. to the right of
the shuk from Allenby. This adorable, cherry-pink hole-in-the-wall cafe serves a mean
sangria (NIS12) and cheap salads (NIS15-20). Live percussion and funk DJ on Friday
nights. Open Su-F noon-2am.
Ilan's Coffee Shop, 90 Ibn Gvirol St. Tables are a prized commodity in
Tel Aviv's first espresso bar. Renowned for their fantastic home brew "Angela Mia"
(NIS6-16), they also recently crossed the fence into the whole-leaf tea business (NIS6-
14). Another location at 20 Carlebach St. Open Su-Th 6:30am-10pm, F 6:30am-3pm.
Kassit, 117 Dizengoff St. The elderly clientele screaming at each other
were the Bohemians and poets who made Kassit the classic Dizengoff political cafe.
