Г ACCOMMODATIONS__
The Tel Aviv hostel scene really has its act together. There's a bed for every bud-
get, and most places come with all the fixings travelers crave. Even better, the vast
majority of hostels practically qualify as beachfront property. Most cluster on Ben-
Yehuda and Ha-Yarkon St. with some just off Allenby Rd. or Dizengoff St. Bus
#222 makes a round-trip between the airport and Tel Aviv and passes most hos-
tels. When choosing, keep in mind that drunken revelry and honking horns down-
town may continue through the wee hours. Also, consider the hostels in Jaffa (see
78). Hostels fill up quickly in the summer, especially the private rooms, so
make reservations if possible. Almost all have 24hr. reception, kitchen, safe and
storage, and Internet access. A huge influx of long-term travelers and day-laborers
gives a lived-in feel to some places; daily work can often be found through the hos-
tel managers. Sleeping on the beach is illegal and dangerous; theft and sexual
assault are not uncommon, and the zamboni-like machines that sweep the beaches
every night for bombs could crush a traveler or at least give a rude awakening.
II Ha-Yarkon 48 Hostel, 48 Ha-Yarkon St. Take bus #4 or 16 from the central bus
station. The bright rooms and showers win popularity contests, but everyone spends
their time in the TV lounge playing pool for free, drinking beer in reception, or on the
rooftop bar. Small breakfast included. Laundry NIS8. Key deposit NIS20. Check-out
10:30a-bed dorms NIS42/US$10.50, NIS120/US$30 for 3 nights, NIS142/
US$38 for 4 nights, NIS252/US$63 for 7 nights. Private rooms NIS176/US$44, with
fan and bath NIS208/US$52, with A/C and bath NIS228/US$57. Rooftop mattress
NIS35/US$8.75 in summer if all beds are taken.
