GETTING AROUND
sioned in his turn-of-the-century Utopian novel, Altneuland (Old-New-Land; see Zion-
ism, 0). Appealing to bourgeois Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe, the
new town quickly developed in the 1920s and '30s and soon became the largest Jew-
ish town in Palestine.
Far from forgotten, Jaffa is still an integral part of Tel Aviv and one of the oldest
functioning harbors in the world. Though once the busiest port in the region, Jaffa
has primarily harbored small fishing boats since the rise of modern shipping centers
in Haifa and Ashdod. Restaurants and galleries cater mostly to tourists, but next to
Tel Aviv's sky-scraping hotels and glossy storefronts, the winding cobble-stone alleys
and stunning sea vistas of Old Jaffa provide a breath of salty Mediterranean air.
Chat with the architect-inhabitant of the Surrealist Hermit's House before
strolling down to Herzliya's beautiful shoreline for a quiet afternoon of sun.
Haggle your head off at the Shuk Ha-Pishpeshim in old Jaffa.
Get up close and personal with Tel Aviv chic on Sheinkert St. then disco 'til
dawn in the myriad of clubs and pubs.
