describe this place; the loud trance music and blacklight-illuminated paintings and wall
hangings of 'shrooms and Shiva surrounding the small dance floor are trippy enough.
When the room starts spinning too much, head upstairs to the even trippier lounge

THEATER AND FILM
Gil Movie Theater , shows the lat-
est Hollywood flicks on 8 screens. Most films are in English with Hebrew subtitles. Call

Jerusalem Cinematheque, on Hebron Rd. in the Hin-
nom Valley, southwest of the Old City walls; walk downhill past Jaffa Gate, or take bus
#7, 8, 21, 30, 44, or 48. Two screens show different films every evening. Tickets
NIS28; unlimited movies for a year NIS450. Ask about a student discount. Call about
Friday night "movie marathons." The annual Jerusalem Film Festival takes over the
entire theater for the early weeks of July, bringing international films to the city and
introducing local creations. Pick up a free book of listings (also in English) at the Cine-
matheque or municipal tourist office, or check the website (http://go.walla.co.il/jff) or
the Friday supplement of the Post. Some films require advance ticket purchase.
J.E.S.T. Theater (Jerusalem English-Speaking Theater; Amateur group performs 3 or 4 English plays per year. Community theater attracts
a large expat crowd.
Khan Theater , across from the railway station in Remez Sq. Egged buses
#7, 8, 21, 30, and 48 pass by the railway station. Built by Ottoman Turks in the 1880s
as a caravan stop. Contains an intimate theater, restaurant, art gallery, and cafe featur-
ing Hebrew stand-up comedy and classical music concerts. Rarely frequented by tour-
ists, but the concerts and plays, mostly in Hebrew, are critically acclaimed.
Palestinian National Theater (al-Nuzha al-Hakawati Theater; «628 09 57), off Nablus
St. near the American Colony Hotel. Walk up Nablus St. and take the first right after the
intersection with Salah al-Din S5m down on the right a metal gate guards a parking
lot; the theater entrance is inside the lot. Take a taxi at night. Has survived through
years of Israeli occupation and IDF raids. Stages plays and musicals, many of which are
political; English synopses are sometimes provided. From the end of June to mid-July,
the theater hosts the Jerusalem International Theater Festival, a gathering of interna-
tional troupes with several English-language plays; The international Puppet Festival is
in October. Most tickets NIS20. Ticket office open Tu-Su 9am-5pm.
DANCE
International Cultural Center for Youth, 12 Emek Refa'im St. , in the
German Colony. Take bus #4,14, or 18. Coed, teacher-led folk dancing every Tu. Begin-

Hebrew Union College, 13 King David St. Outdoor Israeli Folk Dancing
every Su 8-9pm for beginners, 9-ll:45pm for advanced. Teacher-led. NIS18.
House for Hebrew Youth (Beit Ha-No'ar), 105 Ha-Rav Herzog St. Take
bus #6, 17, 19, 31, or 32. Holds folk-dancing classes. Coed W and Sa 8:30pm-

Ulpan Machoi, 105 Ha-Rav Herzog St. , in the same building as the youth
center. Ballet, modern, and jazz dance classes daily Sept-July. Great range of classes
beginner to advanced; one-time only participation also welcome. NIS45 per class.
