For a hassle-free airport experience, bags for El Al flights can be checked in and
inspected in advance at 7 Kanfei Nesharim Sst floor,
on the corner of Jaffa Rd. near the central bus station. Open Su-Th 2-10pm for next-day
flights, 2-7pm for same-night flights.
Trains: As of summer 2000, the Remez Square Station was closed and
travel to Jerusalem was suspended "until further notice." The station is southwest of the
Old City, just south of Liberty Bell Park; take buses #21 or 48 from downtown. Status

Buses: Egged Central Bus Station, on Jaffa Rd. (see
Getting Around Town, below). 10% ISIC discount on long-distance trips, generally only
on tickets purchased at the ticket counter and not on the bus. Drivers often inspect ISIC
cards upon boarding. Times, frequencies, and prices listed here are based on the sum-
mer 2000 schedule; call for current information (or go to the station, since they often

sundown, Sa sundown-midnight; NIS18). Egged buses don't go into any Palestinian
towns in the West Bank; they stop only at Jewish settlements or sites. For example, bus
#160 to Kiryat Arba stops outside Hebron. Two bus stations serve the West Bank. Sule-
iman Street Station, in East Jerusalem between Herod's and Damascus Gates, serves
routes south while Nablus Road Station serves points north. See appropriate sections

Taxis: Jerusalem is served by two main intercity sherut taxi companies. Ha Bira (и 625
45 45), at the corner of Ha-Rav Kook St. and Jaffa Rd. (near Zion Sq.), goes to Tel Aviv
(every 20miam-2am; NIS18, after 11:30pm NIS19, Shabbat NIS20). Office open
Su-Th 5:30am-llpm and F 5:30am-5:30pm. Nesher, 21 King George St. (»625 72 27
or 623 12 31), provides 24hr. door-to-door service to the airport from anywhere in
Jerusalem (NIS40, reserve at least 4hr. ahead). Sherut taxis to other locations leave
from the central bus station. Split among a group they can be as cheap as buses. To
West Bank towns, service taxis (the Arab equivalent of the sherut) leave from outside of
Damascus Gate (see West Bank: Getting Around, 30).
