Nahariya suffers from a remarkable dearth of falafel stands (NIS10) and a glut of
overpriced touristy cafes (bagel toast NIS35). The beaches and gardens make lush
picnic grounds; shop at the Coop Tzafon supermarket , on the corner of
Ha-Ga'aton Blvd. and Herzl St. (open Su-Tu 7:30am-8pm, W 7:30am-8:30pm, Th

between Ha-Ga'aton Blvd. and Ha-Meyasdim St. Plan ahead for Shabbat.

into this old standard, established when Nahariya was a six-year-old farm town. Cakes

Э И SIGHTS AND ENTERTAINMENT_
Nahariya slowly roasts visitors along its sandy strip. Galei Galil, a right turn from
the end of Ha-Ga'aton Blvd. has a breakwater, a lifeguard, lots of sand, and a pool.
(Open end of May-Ocam-6pm. NIS20.) A free beach, past the end of the prome-
nade, has neither a lifeguard nor a breakwater, but locals surf here anyway.
The dull but archaeologically important remains of a 4000-year-old Canaanite
Temple dedicated to Asherah, the goddess of fertility, were discovered in 1947 on a
hill next to the shore (30 Ha-Ma'apilim St. a 20min. walk to the right of the beach
as you face the sea). The Nahariya Municipal Museum, in the Municipality Building
just west of Herzl St. has exhibits on art, archaeology, malacology (the study 0f
seashells), and the history of Nahariya. (Open Su, W lOam-noon and 4-
6pm; Tu, Th lOam-noon. Free.) An ornate mosaic floor is all that remains of a 4th-
century Byzantine church on Bielefeld St. near the Katzenelson School. («987 98
63; call ahead for a free visit.)
The tourist office isn't lying when they say, "Nahariya is hot, but not at night."
Strolling along the Promenade is the most popular activity of all ages. Next to the
beach are a couple of pubs with stupendous sunset views over the Mediterranean.
Pub Mul Ha-Yam, a left turn after Ha-Ga'aton Blvd. meets the sand and steadfastly
vends booze. (NIS 14-20. Open daily 5pm until the tide comes in.) All
ages participate in fun folk dancing at the amphitheater, near the end of Ha-Ga'aton
Blvd. (Late May to early Oct. W and Sa 7:30-9:30pm.) Those determined to kick it
with the 30-60 something crowd can head to the Carlton Hotel disco, in the middle
of town on Ha-Ga'aton Blvd. (Cover NIS50. Open F 10pm.) The Hekhal Ha-Tarbout
, on Ha-Atzma'ut Rd. screens three movies in English.
